About this site
Galičica National Park has one of the best-marked trail networks in North Macedonia: 38 numbered trails with painted blazes and guideposts. Until about 2021 the park's website showed every one of them on an interactive map. Then the site was redesigned, the map's data feed went away, and the trail pages were left with an empty box where the map used to be. As far as we could find, the full set of lines wasn't published anywhere else. OpenStreetMap had 7 of the trails.
The Internet Archive's Wayback Machine had saved a copy of the map's data feed in October 2020. This site is built from that copy. It holds the line of every H, T, G and MTB trail, and the park's ten suggested routes with their official length, time and difficulty.
How we checked it
- The trail totals match the park's 2021 to 2030 management plan: about 52 km of H, 57 km of T and 30 km of G trails.
- Where OpenStreetMap also has a trail (H-6, H-7, T-3, T-7, G-2, G-5 and G-6), the park's line and the OSM line agree to within 50 m for 95 to 100% of their length.
- G-6 to Magaro was the exception. The park drew the climb from the pass as a straight line, so G-6 here uses the OSM route instead.
- We walked T-3 above Velestovo with GPS on in October 2026. Our track sits a median 2 m from the park's line, and 90% of it is within 30 m. That's better than we expected from a line drawn on a map.
What to keep in mind
- The park's lines were drawn on a map, not recorded with GPS. Expect them to be 20 to 50 m off in places, especially in forest.
- They show the network as of 2020. Paths get overgrown and markings fade. A few trails, like the shore path toward St Zaum, are much harder to follow on the ground than on the map.
- Length and climb are measured on the lines with SRTM elevation data. Climb on steep slopes can be overstated.
- The park charges an entry fee per car on the Galičica pass road, and parts of the high ridge are a strict protection zone where you must stay on the trail.
Licensing and credit
The trail lines and route descriptions are the work of the public institution NP Galičica. We republish them, with credit, because they were made for the public and had otherwise vanished. If you represent the park and would like them presented differently, or want to host them again yourselves, please open an issue and we'll do whatever helps.
Place names, guideposts and the G-6 line come from OpenStreetMap, © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License. Map tiles are from OpenTopoMap (CC-BY-SA). The site's code is MIT licensed. Our own additions (translations, stats, write-ups) are CC-BY 4.0.
Because the trail lines come from the park rather than from a survey, they can't be copied into OpenStreetMap without the park's permission. If you walk a trail with GPS on, though, your own track can be added to OSM, and that's the best way to make these trails permanent.
Help keep it right
If you walk one of these trails and find the line wrong, a sign different, or the path gone, please open an issue on GitHub with what you found, and a GPX if you recorded one. All the data and the code that builds this site are in the repository.
